The worst thing for Elena Gilbert is the two of you.

Damon better not forget that Elena wouldn’t want this. She wouldn’t want Klaus to be always right around the corner watching her every move, and knowing that somewhere down the line one of her great grandchildren will be another one of his human blood bags. Damon should know that Elena would never want that, she’d want to be completely free, but she’ll never be able to have that. Shes the doppelganger, she’ll never be free of this supernatural drama because no matter how hard she tries to change it she’ll always be supernatural. “I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here.” Damon can’t forget that she needs him so much right now. He has turned into her pillar, her guideline, her confidant and without him she’ll be lost. He’s so taken aback by what Klaus says because despite everything he feels for her, he cares way more about her safety and happiness than his own. That speaks volumes. Stefan sees it as, “We’ll deal with it.” but Damon looks at the big picture and he wants whats best for Elena; and him walking out right there is his self loathing. His own hatred for himself is whats telling him that yeah, Elena is better off without us.

Klaus doesn’t know anything about the brothers. He doesn’t know what their relationship is like with Elena. Its become so much more than just, “I love her.” and “I love her too.” Its Elena relying on them, needing them, and always wanting them to be in her life because despite everything she loves them both so much and she can’t bear to lose anyone else she loves. Klaus is only comparing it to his situation with his brother, and its blatant that that situation was completely different. After all they’ve gone through, all the times Damon has saved her, all the moments both brothers have given her, she can’t lose them. At this point, Elena can’t live without either Salvatore.
